On April 8, 2024, a total solar eclipse will carve a narrow path of totality from southwest to northeast across 13 U.S. states.

To experience the total phase of the eclipse, you must be located within this narrow path of totality, with the duration lasting the longest at the centerline. But where along the path should you plan to go?

How close can you get in 2024?

Carbondale is on the center-line of the path of totality.

While the entire country will see a partial solar eclipse, for 2024 you must be in the narrow path of totality that sweeps across Southern Illinois to experience the full features of a Total Solar Eclipse.

Eclipse Spiritual Insights
From Chabad of Carbondale & SIU

"Just two weeks after Purim, a Total Solar Eclipse will make its way across certain parts of America. Carbondale experienced this almost seven years ago, and now again! We thought you might appreciate the Jewish message that ties Purim, the eclipse, and current events into one package.

During the Purim story, there was a dark period for the Jewish people, who were at risk of total annihilation. G-d's glory seemed to be eclipsed and hidden during that time. Behind the scenes, however, He was putting all the pieces into place to give us the great most joyous holiday of Purim.

We see that same idea in the traditional Purim treat, the hamantash. From the outside it looks like plain dough, but once you bite into it, you discover the delicious filling that was there all along.

During a total solar eclipse, it might look temporarily like the sun is not there, but it's shining brightly behind the moon. Which is why it's necessary to wear safety eclipse glasses when viewing the eclipse.

On October 7, we were once again attacked by enemies who want to wipe out the Jewish people. Our light was temporarily eclipsed by darkness. But the Purim story teaches us to put on those eclipse glasses, because very soon the G-dly light will shine very brightly for the Jewish people, with the complete redemption brought to us with Moshiach!"

On Monday, April 8th, partial phases of the eclipse will pass over Carbondale starting at about 12:43pm. Totality will start just after 1:59pm, and will last a few seconds more than 4 minutes, nearly double what was seen in 2017.
